چکیده

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is a popular medicinal plant which has been traditionally used in India as spice and medicine to counter various ailments. However, the stress modulatory and antiaging potential of this plant is yet to be characterized. Therefore, the present study evaluates the effect of clove oil (CO) on oxidative stress, lifespan, mobility, and the expression of aging-related proteins using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. The CO (10 ppm) was found to extend mean lifespan in worms by 21.4% (p < 0.001) under normal and by 63% (p < 0.0001) under juglone-induced oxidative stress conditions. The extension of mean lifespan in mev-1 mutant and elevated expression of gst-4 and sod-3 confirmed stress modulatory effects of CO. Additionally, the CO reduced intracellular ROS and Aβ1–42 proteotoxicity. Altogether, the present study unravels the anti-aging and stress modulatory potential of CO and suggests CO as a potential pharmaceutical entity in modulating aging process. Dietary restriction suppresses proteotoxicity and enhances longevity by an hsf-1-dependent mechanism in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Dietary restriction increases lifespan and slows the onset of age-associated disease in organisms from yeast to mammals. In humans, several age-related diseases are associated with aberrant protein folding or aggregation, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. We report here that dietary restriction dramatically suppresses age-associat...

Determination of the effects of food preservatives benzoic acid and sodium nitrate on lifespan, fertility and physical growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Presently, the use of protective food additives such as benzoic acid and sodium nitrate is quite common. However, it was found that these additives, which initially appeared to be harmless, led to the emergence of a number of health problems. Cancer and diseases and deaths with no apparent causes are among the leading concerns. Therefore, the studies which can reveal the genotoxic potential of ...

Icariin and its Derivative Icariside II Extend Healthspan via Insulin/IGF-1 Pathway in C. elegans

Compounds that delay aging might also postpone age-related diseases and extend healthspan in humans. Icariin is a flavonol extracted from several plant species of the Epimedium family. The icariin and its metabolic derivatives have been shown to exert wide protective effects in age-related diseases. However, whether icariin and its derivatives have the potency of delaying aging remains unclear....

TDP-1/TDP-43 Regulates Stress Signaling and Age-Dependent Proteotoxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans

TDP-43 is a multifunctional nucleic acid binding protein linked to several neurodegenerative diseases including Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia. To learn more about the normal biological and abnormal pathological role of this protein, we turned to Caenorhabditis elegans and its orthologue TDP-1. We report that TDP-1 functions in the Insulin/IGF pathway to regulat...

Role of CBP and SATB-1 in Aging, Dietary Restriction, and Insulin-Like Signaling

How dietary restriction (DR) increases lifespan and decreases disease burden are questions of major interest in biomedical research. Here we report that hypothalamic expression of CREB-binding protein (CBP) and CBP-binding partner Special AT-rich sequence binding protein 1 (SATB-1) is highly correlated with lifespan across five strains of mice, and expression of these genes decreases with age a...
